Captain Kirk's Green Wrap

Summary

All 50 pieces have been sold! Estimated ship time for pre-orders is in December 2011!

Have Tribble, Will Travel... Through Space... the Final FrontierNo other character is as iconic to the Star Trek story than Captain James T. Kirk. With this character being so deeply impacting to contemporary science fiction story telling, ANOVOS sought to honor him in the best we could: recreating his uniforms. First we started with the Third Season Original Series tunic.

Now, ANOVOS brings into focus a truly elite piece: Captain Kirk's Tunic Wrap. This replica will be a 50 piece limited release, with no expense spared to recreate the original look, color and fit. The following pages is your exclusive sneak peak of how we came to use a hero piece as our base unit to draw our patterns and replica.

ANOVOS Green Wrap Tunic (Prototype)With the wonderful support of legendary collector Greg Jein, ANOVOS was able to attain a screen-used Captain Kirk Green Wrap Tunic dating back to the filming of the original Star Trek series. The first item of interest that our team noticed was the unique fabric that had been used: a double knit wool, which is a weave of wool rarely used today but was very abundant decades ago. By definition, double knitting is a form of knitting in which two fabrics are knit simultaneously with two yarns on one pair of needles. From the moment our team saw this fabric, they realized that it would be a very difficult to source. The team started their investigations at one of the oldest fabric houses in Los Angeles, inadvertently taking a history course in the way fabric was woven in the 50's and 60's.

The other elements our team were able to gather were the neck lining and gold edge detailing. The neck line was composed of our favorite, and fortunately still attainable, diamond-weave neck fabric, while the golden-edge detail was still equally attainable. As for the command braids, they were still intact and our team ended up scanning this into a high-resolution 1200 dpi file. To their surprise, once the braids were linearized via computer graphics program, our research and development team found a subtle but definite color pattern of repeating helices in the braids.

Deconstructing the Construction

ANOVOS did not deconstruct anything here in the literal sense, so take in a breath of relief... The team we called in to pull patterns from this piece were none other than the professionals who constructed the Star Trek XI uniforms for J.J. Abrams! These wonderful folks were able to derive the pattern from this historical piece with precision and know-how that only professionals who performed this day to day would be able to do. Through examination of this piece, they also uncovered what would be the most challenging part in translating this project into manufacturing: the tunic was mostly hand stitched. It would take no fewer three people each to manufacture this piece.

Another point of construction that was noticed is the existence of elastic strapping with invisible hooks sewn into the edges. This was a very curious element for which their purpose was initially speculated, but proven much later when our exact prototype was created and later worn by our male model, Vic Mignogna. As we discovered, because this piece has a bottom hem just floating just slightly beneath the pant waistline, it was very easy for this tunic to ride up and expose the actor. Thus, it is now believed that those elastic bands with hooks anchored the tunic to Captain Kirk's pants to prevent this effect.

Reconstruction of a Legend

With patterns in hand, details for known for braid and other elements, there left one essential detail to make this all work: fabric. With serendipity on ANOVOS's side, a good friend had luckily discovered a source of the unique double knit wool.

For some time there was a discussion on how to appropriately replicate the piece. Many ideas were floated across the table from reconstruction the hem line down to double lining the piece. All these ideas were great, but because of the nature of the fabric, we were that even the subtle change to internal construction would compromise the outside look of the piece. Therefore, we committed to the hand-stitching process, which means that creating the tunic would be a three person job of some of our manufacturer's highly skilled employees. Due to this time consuming nature, we have elected to do only a limited piece-run of 50 tunics total, thus the limited nature of this piece.

How to Measure

Some of the basics in measuring:

  1. Keep the tape firm but not tight.
  2. Make sure the tape is level around the area you are measuring.
  3. Take measurements in inches to determine correct sizing.
  4. Round up all measurements to the nearest inch. (Example: 10.5 inches round up to 11 inches.)

How to measure specific areas for fitting:

  1. Chest: Measure across the widest part of the chest or across the nipples.
  2. Waist: Measure from the navel point around the thinner area of the belly.
  3. Neck: Measure around the adams apple of the the neck.
  4. Arm Length: With your arm relaxed at side and slightly bent, measure from the center back of the neck, over point of shoulder, down the outside of the wrist.
