Briefly seen in the March 10th episode of THE BIG BANG THEORY entitled "The Prestidigitation Approximation," the Captain Kirk Formal Green Dress Tunic was seen alongside the TOS Command Gold Tunic in Leonard's closet as Priya goes through his existing attire.
Before the scene was shot, the producers of THE BIG BANG THEORY contacted ANOVOS regarding this scene and wanted to have two authentic uniforms for use on the show. After speaking to a key collaborator, John Broughton of Farragut Films, we agreed to have him deliver a prototype we were working on, the Captain Kirk Formal Dress Uniform Tunic that was first seen in the episode "The Menagerie."
Captain Kirk's formal dress uniform replica was made of a lime green satin-like polyester fabric using the reverse side of the fabric, which gives a metallic-like sheen as shown on TV. In terms of its creation and usage on THE BIG BANG THEORY, the costume designer went for how it was shown on TV versus the actual type of fabric used on Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS). The rare gold metallic braid is exact to the original for flag officers and has the gold piping along the shoulders, as well as the decorative service triangles to denote Starfleet accolades. Upon being commissioned by ANOVOS, it was constructed in a matter of two evenings and shipped overnight for use in the show. This article written by John Broughton goes into further detail on how this piece was constructed.
This one-of-a-kind screen-used item was offered to one lucky fan as part of a sweepstakes that StarTrek.com ran until March 21, 2011.
